In a complete contrast from their first game of the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, the Philippine men's basketball team cruised to an easy victory in their second game at the MABA Stadium here.
With Kobe Paras putting on a show, Gilas easily Andre Johnson Womens Jersey turned back Myanmar, 129-34, to improve to 2-0.
It was an impressive display from the young Gilas squad, which struggled mightily in an 81-74 win over Thailand last Sunday night.
"We just wanted to respect the opponents, respect the game, work hard, do the right things, get good habits," said Coach Jong Uichico after their win. "(I told the players) don't fall into bad habits (just) because you can do anything you want in this game."
The Philippines outscored the overmatched Burmese, 31-7, in the Изображение opening frame, and never let up from there. The 19-year-old Paras, after playing for less than seven minutes against Thailand, was unleashed this time around.
Paras responded by showing off his athleticism with several highlight-reel dunks and blocks, and finished with a superb line of 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists, seven steals, and four blocks without committing a single turnover.
Raymar Jose led the Philippines with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the Authentic Arik Armstead Youth Jersey field, while Christian Standhardinger tallied a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds in just 15 minutes and 40 seconds of playing time.
"They worked hard and they defended very well," Uichico said of his players, who shot a blistering 61% from the field against a much smaller Myanmar squad. "Sige-sige ang trabaho nila, regardless of the score."
"Honestly, we'd like for them to relax a little bit, but ano ba talaga, 'di ba? So we decided to keep on playing hard, so it carries over to the next game," he added.
Other statistics spell the extent of the Filipinos' dominance. They had a 51-29 rebounding advantage, a 21-6 assist advantage, and had a whopping 23 steals in the game. In all, they forced Myanmar to commit 41 turnovers, a ghastly number, and scored 59 easy points off those miscues.
Kyaw Sai Pho led Myanmar with 12 points. Meanwhile, Wana Aung, who became a crowd favorite during the 2017 SEABA Championship in Manila, had only two points as he missed 12 of the 13 shots that he took.
Gilas Pilipinas returns to action on Wednesday night against host country Malaysia.
